About

I am a humble songwriter. I like old school pop-melodic songwriting like the kind you got from The Inbreds, Joel Plaskett, Pavement, Eric's Trip, or to go further back; any of the old soul tunes from Motown, many vocal jazz standards, very early reggae, surf/rockabilly and bluegrass.

The product is manic. I never know what I'm going to do until it's done. But here are the songs and their stories.
For those who have been following me for a while, Aww Shucks is now a retired name. I have decided to continue this blog under my given name.

Here is a list of projects that I've been a part of, in chronological order.

August 1st there will be a special surprise for you!

I’ve decided to release a series of E.P.’s over the course of the next year. I’m expecting to be able to produce a total of 8 E.P.’s. Each E.P. will correspond to a particular genre, and each will contain songs from many points in the Paul w. Jantzi recording time-line.

The first E.P. will be ready on the first of August, 2010. It will be the only one that isn’t genre specific, but it will be held together by a particular theme. Songs inspired (in whole or in part) by Judy Garland.

So wait for it. It’s coming soon!

The Sunnies photoshoot produced some serious awesomeness. For example this one at the fountain in St. Henri.

Title: Math, Baseball and Love

Lyrics:

i’ve got you on my mind
but you are oversized
now one and one is a nearly impossible math equation, my thoughts are all taken by you
but i guess that it could be worse

if one and one makes two
i guess i’d like to be a one with you
if we stood together we would make an eleven
and we’d multiply that by all the stars in the heavens and we
would be as big as the universe

throw out your calculator
we can do all the algebra later
this is not a hard decision
let’s forget about our long division
if we’re both exactly one half then two become one

your curve ball really breaks
a little more than i can take
and when i strike out it’s ‘cause I’m really behind it
or maybe I’m dazzled by your elegant wind up
but you have really got my number

i’ve always played the field,
i’ve stolen all the bases I could steal
when i get home i want you waiting for me
but it ain’t to likely since i’m playing on the wrong team
and it makes me wonder

maybe i’m not the best player
but we can still go out and have a beer later
this is not a hard decision
forget the score, because i’m just wishin that you
would like to throw the ball around with me

Title: Presently Tense

LYRICS:

i’m burnin’ burnin up i’m burnin’ up i’ve got a fever
i’m sick i’m sick of this i’m sick of that and i should leave her far behind me
past and present, future tense, i’m always tense it makes no sense
no matter how I conjugate i really can’t communicate with you
and i don’t want this to break
and i don’t want this to break
and i don’t want this to break
I only want to shake this feelin i’ve got over losin you

I’m turnin’ turnin up i’m turnin up an ace of spades here
but I still won’t call you i wont call you on this hand today we’re far too lonely
baby you’ve been betting hard and we both know what’s in the cards
and i think i’ll just walk away while i’m ahead, that is to say i have my pride at least and I don’t want this to break
and i don’t want this to break
and i don’t want this to break
I only want to shake this feeling i’ve got over losin you

Title: The Train Rolls On
Date: April 5 2010

Here’s a song about someone I love. I hope she knows it.
Life is hard, and I’m not sure I’m cut out for it sometimes. But then I find something amazing about it that makes it all worthwhile. I’m smelling roses lately and it helps.
A good day to you.

Title: I’m Trying
Album: Much Ado About Babes and Beers
Year: 2007

This is an old recording that was later re-recorded with some grant money and a full band. Somehow I’m partial to this one, probably because it’s more “punk rock”. I’m going to bring it into the sunnies set list this month and hopefully we’ll actually play a show for an audience someday soon.

My latest thoughts and plans are to release a compilation of my home recordings under the name Nothin’Fancy Jantzi. I’ll email it to blogs and see how it goes over. That’s just one plan. Mostly i want to play some fucking shows. Last night was a huge disappointment, i hate playing for an empty room.  Anyone reading this, book my band, we’re desperate.

Title: The Old Me
Album: Unreleased
Artist: Me, as “Aww Shucks”
“Era”: Sept. 2008

Here’s a song I really dug, but never did much with. I’m pretty much uploading it now so i can hear what tumblr’s weird compression does to the quality of the recording. Every song I do comes out sounding bigger and fatter on tumblr for some reason.

Anyway, the real pièce de résistance for this song is the harmony that comes out at the end. It was really quietly sung and has some really bizarre overtones. I like it. The song is basically about leaving yourself behind. Letting go. It’s a hard thing to do, but when you’re ready for it it is beautiful in a way. Sad and yet hopeful.

17 February 10
I royally effed up the date for this show. In my recent correspondence with Chloe, (and i checked this thoroughly) there was no mention of what month this show would happen in. I suppose I just assumed Feb. However, I realize now that the first email I received over a month ago said she was looking to come here in March. Since it was in a separate Gmail thread, I forgot all about this original email. I have fallen pray to bad memory due to dependence on gmail’s normally quite handy email “thread” feature. In short, I apologize for the confusion, March 19th there will still be a show. Just not this Friday. There will be Chloe Charles, Katie Sevigny, Erik Lindt, and The Sunnies.

Title: Why I Wear Shades
Status: Demo
Date: Today, Feb. 15

Here’s a tune i might possibly attribute to my alter ego Patrice LeVice.
It’s gawd awful, but it gave me something to do while waiting to go to our sound check on Thursday at the Jupiter Room. I really haven’t much to say about it. Just another hangover song.

I’m playing with Sam LeClair on Friday MARCH 19th (not feb.) at the Centre St. Ambroise @ 8:00 w/ Chloe Charles & Katie Sevigny. Come see acoustic Sunnies!

Lyrics:

it’s sad when the sunshine hurts your eyes like this
that’s why i wear shades
so toxic your bloodshot eyes give you away
that why i wear shades
i can see you but you can’t see me
yeah the window to my soul is all fogged up
the naked eye the naked eye the naked eye’s got one more chance to lie
lie to me

one more chance to mess me up one more chance to put me on the ground again
one more chance to get me down, one more chance to mess me all around again.

it’s sad when the poison is the remedy
that’s why i wear shades
it’s sad when you have to have a friend like me
that’s why i wear shades
i can see you but you can’t see into me
yeah the window to my soul is all fogged up
the naked eye the naked eye the naked eye’s got one more chance to lie
lie to me

one more chance to mess me up one more chance to put me on the ground again
one more chance to get me down, one more chance to mess me all around again.
one more chance to mess me up one more chance to put me on the ground again
one more chance to get me down, one more chance to mess me all around again.
